“The Norman PHIL and the OU Combined Choirs will present A German Requiem, by Johannes Brahms, sung in English. There is great speculation that the deaths of his friend Robert Schumann (1856) and his mother (1865) inspired Brahms to compose his large-scale work for soprano and baritone soloists, chorus and orchestra, “A German Requiem”. The text for his opus 45 was assembled by Brahms and taken from the Luther Bible. Originally sung in German on Good Friday, April 10, 1868, in Bremen, Germany, we will present an English version, by Lara Hoggard. A native of Durant, Oklahoma, Dr. Hoggard was the Director of Choral Activities at OU from 1940-1942.
